Kate Winslet to receive CBE

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Actress Kate Winslet is set to be made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to modern Britain.

She will be honored along with Gareth Malone, who performed at Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee concert Saturday and will be honored with an Order of the British Empire.

Although Winslet won acclaim for her work in Heavenly Creatures (1994) and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Sense and Sensibility (1995), Winslet, 36, became a superstar with her performance in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997). That film earned her another Oscar nomination and became the most financially successful movie ever made until the release of Cameron’s follow-up film Avatar (2009).

Titanic told the story of fictitious lovers Rose (Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) set against the backdrop of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The sinking itself marks its 100th anniversary this year.

Winslet won an Oscar for her performance in The Reader (2008). She also reunited with DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road (2008).

Gareth, 36, is being honored for raising awareness of the sacrifices of the U.K. armed forces.

Also set to receive an OBE is singer Gary Barlow, who also contributed to the Queen’s concert.
